Merchant acid (or merchant-grade phosphoric acid, MGA) refers to phosphoric acid sold as an intermediate commodity between producers and fertiliser makers, prior to conversion into DAP, MAP or other phosphates. In the United States, roughly 25% of wet-process phosphoric acid output goes into producing export-bound goods, including merchant acid, DAP, MAP and further phosphate fertilisers[1]. This product enables non-vertically integrated players to source P₂O₅ without operating their own sulphuric acid attack unit for phosphate rock.
