Mosaic

Mosaic: American phosphate and potash giant, listed among the world's largest producers of P and K in the IFA 2023 data.

The Mosaic Company · MOS

Mosaic is an American manufacturer of phosphate and potash fertilisers, regularly ranked among the leading global producers of these two nutrient families. IFA 2023 figures place it alongside Guizhou Phosphorus Chemical Group (China), Nutrien, OCP (Morocco), Ma'aden (Saudi Arabia) and PhosAgro (Russia) in the top tier of phosphate players[1]. In the potash segment, it appears with Nutrien, Belaruskali (Belarus), Uralkali (Russia) and K+S (Germany)[1].

Position in sector concentration

The phosphate and potash fertiliser industry differs from nitrogen in its far more pronounced degree of concentration. Whilst the nitrogen market remains fragmented owing to the wide availability of natural gas and air, phosphate rock and potash mineral resources are geographically confined, which restricts the number of large suppliers[1][2]. The potash sector constitutes the most concentrated market: Canada, Russia and Belarus alone account for roughly 70% of global supply[1][2]. For phosphate, sources likewise indicate heavy concentration, with the top three producing countries approaching a comparable share[1][2].

Operations and products

Mosaic produces notably DAP (diammonium phosphate), containing 46% phosphate (measured as P₂O₅) and 18% nitrogen, as well as MAP (monoammonium phosphate) at 46% phosphate and 11% nitrogen[3]. These two binary (nitrogen-phosphorus) fertilisers accounted for 51% of key phosphate products in 2020[3]. The company also markets potassium chloride (MOP), the standard agricultural potash product at 60% potash (measured as K₂O)[3]. MOP and potassium sulphate (SOP) together represented 58% of key potash products in 2020[3].

Competitive context

Competition in phosphorus and potash markets pits Mosaic against large integrated groups or mining concerns. In phosphates, Moroccan OCP benefits from the world's largest reserves, whilst PhosAgro and EuroChem exploit Russian deposits. Ma'aden has emerged as a major producer from Saudi Arabia[1]. For potash, Nutrien — formed from the merger of Agrium and PotashCorp — represents Mosaic's largest North American rival, whilst Belaruskali and Uralkali dominate supply from the former Soviet bloc[1]. This concentrated market structure directly influences global price references and trade flows.

Links to other entries

Mosaic and Nutrien are frequently cited together in market analyses as examples of the consolidation observed in North America over the past decade[1][2]. Their geographical positioning affords privileged access to major consumption zones, notably Brazil for phosphate imports and Asian markets for potash. Nevertheless, Chinese presence remains significant in the phosphate market with Guizhou Phosphorus Chemical Group[1], which precludes reducing global competition to a single North-South axis.
