The annual potash contract is the agreement whereby a buyer undertakes to take delivery, over a twelve-month period, of tonnages of muriate of potash (MOP) or sulphate of potash (SOP) at an agreed or indexed price. This arrangement dominates international trade, with supply concentrated among a handful of Canadian, Belarusian and Russian consortiums. Negotiations with major importers, notably Brazilian and Indian buyers, set the price benchmarks for spot markets. Global potash consumption for fertiliser use reached 41.6 Mt of K2O in 2025[1]. Contracted volumes typically include options to adjust delivery schedules according to the seasonality of spreading operations.
